Earth's Eye
The photos on this page were taken on the shores of Lake Michigan.
The title of the page comes from a quote by Henry David Thoreau:
"A lake is the landscape's most beautiful and expressive feature.  It's earth's
eye; looking into which the beholder measures the depth of his own nature."
Lake Michigan has America's longest fresh water coastline.  It's the world's
fifth largest lake and it touches the shore
s of four U.S. states and Canada.
It's often referred to as a "sweet water sea."
Everyone needs a tranquil, healing sanctuary, a safe harbor
from the storms of a troubled world.
-- Marian Reish
You won't find Wi-Fi here, but you will connect.  -- Gale McMillan
I was up and dressed before dawn and, by the time the sun
was creeping over the tall pines, I was headed to the lake,
camera flung over my shoulder, ready to capture the golden
hour. I felt like a kid who was tiptoeing into the kitchen to
steal a handful of Oreo cookies.
-- Diane Arbus
An evening mist envelopes the lake and the peace of
a day almost done envelopes me.
-- Marie Carroll
Perhaps the answer depends on a walk around the lake.
-- Wallace Stevens
May your heart be like a lake, with a calm surface
and great depths of kindness.
-- Lao Tzu
Why it is that my troubles disappear at the water's edge, why do they
drift away to a destination far removed from my shoulders, where
they had so recently resided?  -- Regina Price
Not every lake dreams of being an ocean.  Fortunate are the ones
who are happy with who they are.
