Question 1:

Most people believe that the first Thanksgiving celebration ever held in what is now the
U.S. was the famous Pilgrim feast at Plymouth Colony in 1621.  But...maybe not?

Texas:   In 1541, Spanish explorer, Francisco Vasquez de Coronado, held a thanksgiving
celebration with the people he called "Tejas" (members of the Hasinai group of Caddo-
speaking Native Americans), in what is now Texas.

Florida:   Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1565, in what is today St. Augustine, Florida,
when Spanish Admiral Pedro Menendez de Aviles and his men shared a harvest feast
with members of the Timucuan tribe.

Virginia:   The first permanent English settlement of Jamestown, Virginia held a service of
thanksgiving in 1610.

Massachusetts:   In 1621, the Pilgrims and Adventurers at Plymouth Colony invited
members of the Wampanoag tribe to share a feast of Thanksgiving in Plymouth, MA.

Question 2:

Illinois:  95% of the U.S. pumpkin crop is grown in Illinois (pumpkins intended for
processing).  Over 1.5 billion pounds of pumpkins are produced each year in the U.S.

Question 3:

Abraham Lincoln:  Although Thanksgiving celebrations had been popular since Colonial
times, especially in New England, Thanksgiving wasn't declared an official federal holiday
until President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation in 1863.

Question 4:

Harry Truman:  During the 1947 Thaksgiving season, the National Turkey Federation
presented a live turkey to President Harry Truman, who promptly "pardoned" it, starting a
tradition.  The pardoned turkeys are sent to the historic Mount Vernon estate to live out
their lives.

Wisconsin:  Close to 770 million pounds of cranberries are produced in the U.S. annually.  
Two states, Wisconsin (450 million) and Massachusetts (210 million), are responsible for
most of the production.  Twenty per cent of the cranberry crop is eaten at Thanksgiving.

Minnesota:  Minnesota is the top turkey-producing state in America, with a production
total of about 46.5 million. In the U.S., about 250 million turkeys are raised annually.

and Mississippi.  The U.S. produces about 2.5 billion pounds annually.

1956:  The first time the Detroit Lions played football on Thanksgiving Day was in 1934
when they hosted the Chicago Bears and that in
naugural game was broadcast on radio.  
In 1956, it was broadcast for the first time on television.  The Lions have played in every
Thanksgiving game since 1934, except the years 1939-1944.
